Big Church Festival 2023

So, about my first time at Big Church Festival…

It’s been about 3 weeks since Big Church Festival (BCF) 2023 happened and tbh it has taken me about the same amount of time to recover from what was my first time attending. The festival which ran over the bank holiday weekend in May (27th-28th) was an experience (and a good one at that). And although I arrived tired and left even more tired, the latter tired was all worth it.

Big Church Festival 2023: What's it all about?

For anyone not in the know: Big Church Festival, formerly known as Big Church Day Out, is a yearly event held in West Sussex that spans over 2 days (4 days if you count the pre-set up and and post set down days for all the brave camping folk) that features some of your favourite Christian artists, all gathering together to worship Jesus. It’s an event for you, me, the kids, your mum, dad, auntie and friends.

( FYI I checked into a nearby B&B ) (it was Lancasters Cottage for the curious).

Before I get into the music/worship, an honorable mention to the organizers of BCF, because there was something for everyone, and plenty of it. Funfair rides came in the form of bumper cars, a ferris wheel, and a star-flyer. While attractions ranged from inflatable zorb ball rolling to Eco Disco to all-ages-welcome spinning sessions. I spied tea drinkers afternoon tea-ing in the Tea Garden Cafe, to retail shoppers grabbing gifts & festival merch over in the Expo Tent (or buying Hannah Dunnett greeting cards from the BCF Book Shop like I did), and it was evident that there was never a dull nor a quiet moment (except maybe when everyone was asleep in their tents or had left to depart to their hotels).

Big Church Festival 2023: Fun for all

It’s worth noting that BFC is super family friendly too. Kids were kept happy & occupied: whether they were roaming + adventuring around the grounds adult free; or worshiping with their parents in the Superbook Kids Tent or having a field day over in the haystack seating area playfully wrecking it to shreds. Add to this, baby changing and feeding facilities, phone charging stations and water refill points easily accessible, everyone seemed catered to. Speaking of catering, I cannot not mention the food. There was a food truck for almost every type of cuisine you can imagine, which is why I ate my way through Los Churros Amigos, Afromusa, Thai Bites, Shippy Shippy (plus more) within the 48 hours of me being there. FYI: this is not advisable and note to self: next year bring a packed lunch.

Travelling to BCF was a breeze. I opted to drive down with my friend Sheba, instead of taking the train and the BCF shuttle bus. After the 2 hour drive from London, I arrived just after 2pm on Saturday to join a sea of [I’m told was] approx 30,000 people.

Big Church Festival 2023: The Stages & Acts

With 6 stages spread across the 6,000 acres that is the beautiful outdoorsy grounds called Wiston House, almost every Christian music genre was available for you to do your best dance or head nod to. Or to simply be still, with your hands-raised-up-in-surrender-and-focus-on-God to. Whether that was at the Main Stage where the likes of Sam Henshaw, Martin Smith and Kings Kaleidoscope headlined, or over at the Illuminate Stage where gospel rap/grime was going strong courtesy of Guvna B, Still Shadey (who I happened to interview and you can check out here) and Joshua Luke Smith et el, the extensive line-up of artists had me wishing I had been gifted the supernatural ability to be at all 6 stages at once or be able to teleport myself from one stage to another within 3 seconds max.

Unfortunately this was not the case and not only did I find myself clocking 36,000 steps across the 2 days but equally missing out on several acts (as well as any of the lyrical action happening at the Spoken Word Stage). All was not lost ,as en route to the Worship Tent [where I later caught Becca Folke’s Holy Spirit filled worship and then much later later Amanda Cook’s night time set] I stumbled across Tom’s Stage in association with CSW. I was not mad at this, especially because I made not one but two discoveries. The first discovery was the soft soulful voice of @racheljanemusic whose 15 minute set had me sitting barefoot on the grass swaying and vibing and swaying some more. If you don’t know about Rachel, you have permission to at this very moment pause reading this so you can go find her on Spotify and add her to your ‘Listen Later’ playlist.

The second discovery was putting a face to the name of the talent that is @ryanhylton. [Sidenote: since last year I have been listening + liking Ryan’s songs ‘Holy Water’ and ‘No Other’ which Premier Gospel Radio put me onto, so while I knew his voice, his face remained a mystery.] Ryan graced us with a set that included both of the above, alongside ‘Good God’ and ended with the beautifully written ‘Purify’, a song he penned after his mum passed away. Again you have full permission at this very moment to go add all these songs to your freshly created ‘Listen Later’ playlist.

Big Church Festival 2023: Spiritual Overflow

By the end of Day 2, I’ll admit that physically I was t-i-r-ed but spiritually my heart+soul was overflowing with worship unto God. And why wouldn’t it be, especially after witnessing (and worshipping with) the likes of Bethel who helped me reflect on the “Goodness of God”; or United who reminded me of the “Another” who is always with me when in the fire and not forgetting Israel Houghton & New Breed (inc wife Adrienne and daughter Mariah) whose rendition of “To Worship You” summarised the entire why behind me being at BCF.

Big Church Festival really did feel like one big church family hangout and throughout the weekend I couldn’t help wondering if this was a glimpse of what heaven would look like: a continuous praise party where people from every corner of life are present all because we chose to accept life in Christ courtesy of Jesus. Maybe it will or maybe it won’t, but until He (Jesus) comes back, I think I will find myself at BCF in the interim. See you at BCF 2024.
